Papua is a province in Indonesia that has abundant natural resources and strong connection with their culture. One of the most obvious culture expression of Papuan is traditional dance. A traditional dance is often used as an expression of culture by a particular group of people. It may symbolise the many things that the group has to face in their daily life. Most importantly, the traditional dance has a valuable cultural element that must be celebrated. Every tribe in the region has their own kind of traditional dance. Each dance has their own purpose.

The tribes in Papua believe that it’s important to never forget these traditional dances. They tell the world of their story and their beliefs. To abandon them would mean that they will lose their identity.

The nature in Papua has been attracted many tourists for very long time, not only tourists from other cities in Indonesia, but also tourists from other countries outside Indonesia. There are so many  Indonesian tribes and clans that you can find in Papua. Two of the most popular tribes in Papua are Asmat Tribe and Dani Tribe.

There are still many other tribes that are scattered in various parts of this island, including tribes that became parts of Melanesia Cluster. Papua is not only popular for its nature but this island is also very rich of local culture and traditions that might be quite unique for some people.

Located on the western half of the island of New Guinea and long racked by a simmering violent separatist insurgency, Papua encompasses Indonesia’s two easternmost provinces.

A former Dutch colony, West Papua was formally incorporated into Indonesia in 1969, after an undisputed vote of about 1,025 representative tribal leaders. The result of the plebiscite was overseen and endorsed by the United Nations.

Since the democratization in 1998, especially since 2007, democracy by mean of elections has been introduced to increase political participation in Papua and West Papua. The fact that the leaders of Papua and West Papua provinces are democratically elected by the people has strengthened the legality of West Papua as a province of Indonesia.
