Workers Killed by Free West Papua

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – As many as 31 workers of the Trans Papua road project who are working to build bridges in Kali Yigi and Kali Aurak, Yigi District, Nduga Regency, Papua, are suspected of being killed by Free West Papua armed groups. Currently, the Papua Police is investigating the incident.

Based on the information from the Papua Regional Police, until Monday night, December 3, 2018, at 22:35 WIT, 24 people had been killed first. After that, as many as 8 people had fled to the house of a DPRD member. However, the eight people were picked up by armed groups. Seven of them were killed, one person fled and has not been found.

Papua Police Public Relations Head Commissioner Ahmad Musthofa Kamal said his party had deployed a team to investigate information on the murder of PT Istaka Raya project workers who were working to build a bridge project in Kali Yigi and Kali Aurak, Nduga Regency, Papua. The dispatched personnel are a combination of the Police and the TNI. “We are always ready to evacuate the victims and arrest the perpetrators,” said Ahmad in a written statement, Monday night, December 3, 2018.

The news of this murder first emerged on Monday, December 3, 2018, at around 15.30 local time. Through SSB radio, Pastor Wilhelmus Kogoya (a church leader in Yigi district) said that 24 people had been killed in Kali Yigi and Kali Aurak, Yall Nduga District.

The murder allegedly occurred on Sunday, December 2 2018. They are employees of PT Istaka Karya, a State-Owned Enterprise (BUMN) working on the Trans Papua road project. Two masons escaped, but their whereabouts are not yet known.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Chairman of the Nduga DPRD, Alimin Gwijange, who was contacted by Jubi, on Tuesday morning, December 4 2018, said that the 24 workers killed were killed by an armed group led by Egianus Kogoya. “That’s right. There were 24 people who were killed. The other two fled,” said Alimin Gwijangge.

Gwijangge said she was in Timika on her way to Jayapura to attend the training. After hearing the news, he decided to return to Nduga.

Gwijangge did not know whether they were killed with sharp weapons or other objects. According to the information he got, they were killed in a place that could only be reached by road and only communicated using SSB.
