Despite the low level armed insurgency by Free West Papua, the security impact in West Papua is huge against the population. Terror, killing, burning and intimidation by Free West Papua armed criminal group is among worst in the world. The armed group caused decades of hardship for indigenous Papuan people. 

The majorly western part of the Papua island had been under Dutch colonial rule and later was returned to Indonesia, because when Indonesian independence was proclaimed in 1945, West Papua was part of Indonesia even before Indonesia’s independence, This what Papua leaders said Papua Ab initio belong to Indonesia.

Despite its ethnic and cultural differences, all Indonesian are brothers including the Papuans who sought to have a similar dream for development and political unity with Indonesia.  Since the beginning of the return of West Papua by fair and internationally recognized referendum in 1969, The Free Papua Movement (OPM), The Free West Papua and many other small group which were created for personal interest of some Papuan has used terror and intimidation to influence the people.

We can say that a fraction of Papuan elites maintained a separate way of thinking to rebel against majority Papuan who longing for peace and development. They continue to provoke conflict and create a grim image of Papua as a place where genocide occurred. They keep on saying that brutal Indonesian colonial rule has caused thousands of natives were imprisoned, raped, tortured, and killed, and then their real intention appear….they want to owned the political leadership by forcing referendum as a way out. One of those elite is the current self-claimed interim President Benny Wenda.

After Wenda’s run away from his crime causing two innocent people killed, he was campaigning for Papua independence in Britain, where he remains to this day. His ambition to be the prime leader of all Papuan was rejected by all Papuan tribal leaders. He kicked the leader of the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP), Octovianus Motte simply by racist reason that Mote’s wife is Javanese. He use the Free West Papua Campaign, which seeks to gain international attention by spreading hoaxes especially about genocide in Papua. 

These campaigns have made big impact in deepening the conflict in Papua. He made it even worse by creating a ‘West Papua Provisional Government’, as if he lives in his own fantasy.

The Indonesian response to the announcement has been very soft almost ignoring. However, Benny’s genocide black campaign is very dangerous in maintaining conflict in Papua.

There is no such anti-colonial struggle in Papua and West Papua. Papua and West Papua is part of an independence state of Indonesia. All over the world, we see the development of Papua and West Papua is very fast comparing to its neighbors, PNG and Vanuatu.

Please email your local representative, MP, and government if you can: to expose the dark side of ‘Free West Papua’ campaign, but most importantly share the truth about Papuan story and not Benny Wenda’s fantasy.
