West Papua Liberation Army Claims Responsibility for Fresh Shootings in Bintang Mountains, Papua

TEMPO.COJakarta – The National Liberation Army of West Papua-Free Papua Movement (TPNPB-OPM) has claimed responsibility for the attack on Sunday morning, May 1, 2022 at round 10:45 a.m. Eastern Indonesia Time that wounded two members of the military-police joint Cartenz Task Force.

The attack took place in Apmisibil village, Okbibab district, Pegunungan Bintang regency, Papua.

“We received reports from Pegunungan Bintang that we had successfully shot members of TNI-Polri,” TPNBM-OPM spokesperson Sebby Sambom said in a voice message on Monday, May 2, 2022.

He added the attack was launched by TPNPB-OPM’s 15th Defense Territory Command and spearheaded by Brig. Gen. Lamek Tapol. “The shootings were true, and they are responsible for the attack,” he said.

Sebby also claimed his side had shot two soldiers who were transporting logistics on Saturday, April 20, 2022. According to him, the assault was mounted by General Goliath Tabuni, Maj. Gen. Lekagak Talenggen, Brig. Gen. Militer Murib and Brig. Gen. Peni Murib on Ilaga district, Puncak regency, Papua.

Pegunungan Bintang Police Chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Cahyo Sukarnito confirmed the attack and said the two wounded personnel were 2nd Police Brig. Vanny Putra Perdana and 1st PVT. Willy John. Both were immediately evacuated to Jayapura on a police chopper.

“We prioritized to evacuate both victims for immediate treatment from paramedics,” he said on Sunday, May 1, 2022.
