Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) Representative of the Papua Province emphasized that the Marius Betera death case has been completed and the investigation report and recommendations have been issued.
“We have the authority to issue recommendations based on the findings in the field. We are guided by the principles of data, information and balid (DIV) in conducting investigations,” said the Head of the Representative Office of Komnas HAM RI Papua Province Frits B. Komnas HAM Papua said that it received reports of violence against civilians, then followed up with direct checks in the field.
The first problem that Komnas HAM received was that Marius Betera’s garden was destroyed by the company. However, after checking the location, the garden in question did not belong to the victim, but was in the company area.
The next problem that was reported was that the victim died of violence. When conducting a check on the location, Komnas HAM found that the victim had already been buried.
Komnas HAM also found that police officers who commit excessive acts of violence have been recommended to be sanctioned by the internal police. From the findings in the field, we carry out testing and analysis.
Previously, Komnas HAM on 8 July 2020 released several findings and recommendations related to this case.
These recommendations include asking the Papua Police Chief to process the law for police officers who commit acts of violence against civilians.
Another recommendation is to request a review of police posts, control, and training of police officers.
Apart from that, there is also a need for meetings between stakeholders to implement business and human rights mechanisms in business management.
