The Papua Provincial Government hands over the authority for the new normal adaptation to districts / cities

New Normal protocols in Papua

Jayapura (ANTARA) – The Papua provincial government has finally handed over the authority to implement the new normal adaptation to districts and cities.

The Deputy Governor of Papua, Klemen Tinal in Jayapura, said Tuesday that restricting community activities would fall under the authority of the regent and mayor.

“Regents and mayors will later adjust to the objective conditions in their respective regions,” he said.

According to Klemen, each district and city also has a head of the COVID-19 task force where the Papua Provincial Government only prepares a general framework by looking at the existing situation.

“So what it looks like in the field depends on the regent and mayor by looking at the situation,” he said.

He explained that his party is now focusing on reducing the ratio rate which has increased very high, namely 2.8 from previously only reaching one.

Meanwhile, Jayapura Deputy Regent (Wabup) Giri Wijayantoro said that for the area which is the gateway to Papua via Sentani Airport, economic activity is limited to 17.00 WIT.

“We hope that this policy of restricting economic activity can reduce the number of COVID-19 cases and not increase it,” he said.

He added that this limitation does not limit economic activity but only the time in which the plan will last for two incubation periods or one month.

Notes:

A former Dutch colony, West Papua was formally incorporated into Indonesia in 1969, after an undisputed vote of about 1,025 representative tribal leaders. The result of the plebiscite was overseen and endorsed by the United Nations.

Since the democratization in 1998, especially since 2007, democracy by mean of elections has been introduced to increase political participation in the two provinces. The fact that the leaders of Papua and West Papua provinces are democratically elected by the people has strengthened the legality of the region as a province of Indonesia.
