Solidarity for West Papua

For the Free Papua armed criminal group or Free West Papua separatist terrorist movement to succeed in West Papua is impossible. However, a significant international campaign demonizing Papuan local government and Indonesia may threat peaceful economic and socio-political development in the region.

Currently, support for the Free Papua Movement (Organisasi Papua Merdeka, or OPM) and Free West Papua (Papua Barat Merdeka, or PBM) is minuscule, for example among Pacific Island countries, Vanuatu is the only hardcore supporter. Vanuatu can be considered as the most unethical state regarding its critics towards Indonesia. Vanuatu accused without evidence and always avoid direct dialogue about why they used West Papua issues as part of its domestic political campaign. Vanuatu should be free from its own fixated behaviour towards West Papua issue.

Several opportunist politicians in some countries that have expressed their support to Free West Papua terrorist separatist. However, their support is more like pouring fuel to instigate Papuan people to kill each other. The prospect that international support to a peaceful development under democracy principles is continue to grow.

The United Nations will always refuse West Papua separatist movement, taking the stance that West Papua lies within Indonesia’s sovereign borders, deeming the matter an internal dispute.

There is only one aspect that Indonesia should be very careful, human rights. Much of the international attention on Indonesia has been on the allegations of human rights abuses in West Papua. This issue is very complicated because Papuan armed criminal group continuously killing innocent people from time to time.

Efforts to prevent violent and brutal activities of this armed criminal group is not an easy task. This armed criminal group is also supported by social media buzzers, which actively producing and publishing hoax and lies about West Papua and Papua.

As a democratic country, Indonesia will continue its policy of special autonomy focusing on developing Papua and West Papua. After executing special autonomy for the last 20 years, there are so many improvement in Papua and West Papua. However, corruption and miscalculation in using special autonomy fund by Papuan local government have overshadowed its success story. Conflict agitator and provocateur continue to instigate conflict in Papua and West Papua using a twisted argument about the failure of special autonomy.
