Illegal firearms trade in Nabire
Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) – The head of the Papua Regional Police, Inspector General of Police Paulus Waterpauw, said the joint TNI and police team had thwarted the sale of assault rifles in Nabire which involved a police officer who was a member of the Mobile Brigade.
“It is true that the joint team succeeded in thwarting the sale and purchase of firearms which involved Brimob members, namely Bripka JH, and are currently detained in Jayapura,” he said, in Jayapura, Papua, Friday.
He said they were currently investigating the case, including the possibility that the assault rifles were used to strengthen armed groups.
He stated that information about the buying and selling of firearms had been detected for a long time but only came to light after a member of the Mobile Brigade in Nabire and two firearms were brought.
“From the confession of his colleague who is the intermediary, there have been six times the activity of buying and selling firearms,” said Waterpauw.
He issued a signal that the assault rifle would later be used by people or groups to disrupt security and order as well as shoot civilians and security forces.
The case of buying and selling firearms was uncovered on Thursday (21/10) when the Police Brigadier Chief of JH arrived in Nabire with two assault rifles of the M-16 and M4 types.
“Be patient, yes, because investigators are still investigating while waiting for a witness who is a former member of the TNI who is currently on his way to Jayapura,” said Waterpauw.
