Minister of Home Affairs: South Papua Province Consists of 4 Regencies
Jakarta, CNN Indonesia — The Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian said that there is a specificity for people’s aspirations regarding the expansion of the South Papua Province which is only four districts.
“We will revise the Papua Special Autonomy law, in Papua there must be an acceleration of development, Merauke can already be divided into South Papua Province even though there are only four regencies because of the specificity for Papua,” said Tito during a visit to the Indonesian and Papua New Guinea border in Sota District. , Merauke Regency, Papua, citing Antara, Sunday (12/9).
He said that the expansion of the province in Papua would be added to the province of South Papua which includes Merauke Regency, Boven Digoel Regency, Mappi Regency and Asmat Regency whose capital is Merauke.
According to him, initially the Bintang Mountains Regency wanted to join the expansion area for South Papua Province, but considering the Bintang Mountains region chose to join the aspirations for the expansion of Saireri because it was close to Jayapura.
However, with the new rules, said the former National Police Chief, the four regencies in the South Papua region could form their own provinces.
According to Tito, according to the direction of the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD who also visited, his party discussed and prepared a Government Regulation with a deadline of October 19. Then it was rounded up again by hearing the aspirations of the people from below.
Therefore, the former Papuan Police Chief said that all components of society, especially community leaders in the South Papua region, must unite and make a written statement to be submitted to President Joko Widodo.
“The Merauke region has extraordinary agricultural and fishery potential. Supported by adequate human resources, I believe that South Papua Province in the future will become the most advanced province in Papua,” he added.
