Jayapura (ANTARA) – The government of Asmat Regency, Papua has agreed not to hold a cultural festival, even though the area has been declared a COVID-19 green zone.

“We have had a meeting with the Diocese of Asmat and agreed not to carry out these activities because the new corona pandemic is still hitting several areas in Papua,” Regent Asmat Elisa Kambu told ANTARA on Sunday.

Admittedly, the festival, which is held annually on the second week of October, has certainly not been held.

There were many considerations before it was decided not to hold the Asmat cultural festival, which has been held since 1981.

Indeed, the main factor in not carrying out the festival was COVID-19 which also resulted in not normal transportation, especially ships owned by PT. Pelni which crossed to Agats, the capital of Asmat.

“The Regional Government of Asmat has asked PT Pelni to return to serve and stop at Agats but it has not yet been fulfilled because Timika and Merauke have not yet been opened,” said the Regent of Kambu, who was contacted by his cell phone from Jayapura.

The Asmat cultural festival which is held every year presents various performances including dances and songs, carving demonstrations, boat competitions and carving auctions.

We hope the 2020 Asmat cultural festival news can explain to all Asmat culture lovers understand.
