Maluku and Papua Record the Highest Economic Growth in Last Year

KONTAN.CO.ID – JAKARTA. The Indonesian economy grew 5.02% in the fourth quarter of 2021. Meanwhile, throughout 2021, the Indonesian economy grew 3.69%. Regionally, the economic growth of Maluku and Papua was the highest last year.

The economic growth of Maluku and Papua last year reached 10.09%. Much higher than the regional economic growth of Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali and Nusa Tenggara.

“Even though Maluku and Papua share only 2.49%, in 2021 the economy will grow 10.09%,” said Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Margo Yuwono at a press conference held in a hybrid manner, Monday (7/2).

Margo said the skyrocketing economic growth was driven by an increase in metal ore mining activities, particularly the production of nickel ore, gold ore and silver ore in North Maluku.

Meanwhile, the high growth in Papua was also due to an increase in ore mining activities, particularly copper and gold production as well as an increase in construction activities to support the implementation of PON 2020 last year in Papua.

Margo added that the spatial structure of Indonesia’s economy in 2021 is still dominated by the provinces on the island of Java, which contribute to GDP of 57.8% with a growth of 3.63%. Then followed by Sumatra which contributed to GDP by 21.70% with a growth of 3.18%.

Meanwhile in Kalimantan, it contributed 8.25% to the National GDP with an economic growth of 3.18%. Sulawesi contributes 6.89% to GDP with a fairly large economic growth of 5.67%. And finally Bali and Nusa Tenggara which gave the smallest contribution of 2.78% with a growth of 0.07%.
