Why Free West Papua is destined to fail?

In the eyes of many, West Papua is internationally recognized as part of Indonesia.

Background

Most people in the world realize that the western half of New Guinea, the world’s second largest island is Indonesian territory. This resource-rich island is very famous for its forest and beautiful landscapes. West Papua  is a tropical island with primeval rain forests, powerful rivers, beautiful beaches, lakes, and mountains.

In addition to historical fact that the island is recognized as Indonesian territory, Papuan natives share similar appearances to other eastern Indonesian. From hundreds different ethnicity, two major ethnic groups are Asian (Austronesian) and Melanesian.

Papuan nationalism is always part of Indonesian nationalism as shown in fighting against the Netherlands colonialism.

Papuan opposition to Indonesian rule was part of the Dutch cunning plan to comeback colonize the island , it was failed because it was only supported by a very small number people, while majority supported Indonesia. In 1965, this small number of people manifested itself in rebellious violent revolts known as the “Free West Papua” These revolts were short-lived, as no support from the people. However, the Free Papua Movement was born and continue to terrorize the populations including Papuans, migrants, and foreigners especially Westerners.

Why is the Free Papua Movement is destined to fail?

Since the the internationally recognized Act of Free Choice of 1969, the Free Papua Movement has lost its foundation to terrorize the people for its violent separatism. The Free Papua Movement peaceful protest is only a camouflage and flying the Morning Star is a provocative peaceful means to attract violence. The Free Papua Movement action is generally met with persuasion by West Papua local government.

The Free West Papua Campaign which was launched in Oxford, England, in 2004 led Benny Wenda is another form of “peaceful” campaign to provoke and deepen conflict in West Papua. It hopes to bring bloody conflict between Free West Papua armed wing and police and military in West Papua. International attention to human rights will come when huge bloody conflict happened. That is why Indonesian police and military aer very careful in handling this group.

All Indonesians are brothers and sisters, Papuans are Indonesians with all their citizenship rights. They elect their leader democratically. Many West Papuans, feel they have their freedom within Indonesia. However, Free West Papua continues to destroy peace by maintaining conflict.
