Indigenous Papuan Peoples Support the Extension of Special Autonomy II

Jayapura Regency – Special Autonomy II – Boaz Enock (Ondoafi / Leader of Sosiri Village) said that if the indigenous Papuan had fully supported the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, so that whatever Government policy would be reinforced.

“We are indigenous people who have embraced some of our rights as indigenous people and aware to join the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, so that we will support any policy of President Jokowi, especially considering how much President Jokowi really love Papua include us as indigenous people, ”said Boaz Enock.

He conveyed that special autonomy (Otsus) is evidence of the attention of the Central Government to Papua but, if in the course of time the management of the Special Autonomy fund does not reach indigenous peoples, that is certainly an individual action and the actions must be accounted for.

Boaz Enock repeated again: “As indigenous people, we recognize that Otsus is proof of the central government’s attention to Papua. If the management of the Special Autonomy Fund does not reach the customary community during its course, it is certain that it is an act of an individual and must be held accountable for that act.”

“Therefore, if there is a government plan to extend Otsus to Volume II or whatever its name is, it is our duty as indigenous people who have become part of this great nation to support it, ” he concluded.

Notes on Special Autonomy II

Special autonomy is part of democratic means to address aspiration of Papuan people. In late 2001, Indonesian government introduced a “special autonomy” bill for West Papua. The bill, which was drafted mostly by indigenous Papuans, passed the Indonesian parliament as Law No. 21 in November 2001.

Majority West Papuan indigenous peoples support the continuation of special autonomy, also known as special autonomy II. However a small number group of people tried to reject it in order to create a conflicted situation to push an evil agenda of separatism.
